This is an Italian dish. It is like a closed pizza. You have the pizza base on the outside and the toppings inside. Bake it, eat it and love it..!!!
This may seem like a long process, but I made it in about 2 hours, including making the pizza dough…!!! Yes.. it is that simple. And if you have store bought pizza dough, then voila…. You are done in about 30 minutes.
Serves: 2 | Cooking time: 30 mins |
Ingredients:
Pizza dough – 2 servings (as per this recipe)
All purpose flour – 1 tbsp (for dusting)
Cheese (mozzarella/pizza) – 1 cup grated
Cabbage (Shredded) – 1 cup
Carrot (grated) – ½ cup
Salt & pepper – as per taste
Oil – 1 tbsp
Procedure:
- Heat oil in a pan and add the cabbage and carrot to it. Stir fry it for a few minutes.
- Add salt and pepper to it and mix well. Remove from heat.
- Sprinkle your work surface with flour and roll out a 9 inch circle with half the pizza dough.
- Avoid using a rolling pin. I noticed that using hand makes the crust a bit fluffier.
- Spread a bit of cheese on half the circle.
- Spread the cabbage-carrot mixture on top and top it off with cheese.
- Leave about 2 cm gap at the edge for the seal.
- Cover the stuffing with the other half and seal the edges tightly using a fork. Brush a pit of oil on the outside.
- Repeat the process to make another calzone.
- Prepare a baking tray with aluminum foil and grease it with oil.
- Bake these at 200°C (~400°F) for about 20-25 minutes or till the crust is nice golden brown in color.
- Serve it with a side of marinara sauce.
Variations:
Feel free to add any other veggies to the stuffing. Although, I will be a little cautious if adding starchy veggies like potato as the calzone can become too heavy.
Use the whole wheat version of the pizza dough for a healthier option.
